Do’s and Don’ts of Water Damage

  • Do make sure everyone is safe!  This is a very important first step.  If everyone is safe and unharmed, the rest can be repaired. No physical item is worth bodily harm or death.
  • Do contact Global Restoration Services immediately. It is vital to call a certified water damage restoration company .  You do not have to wait for your insurance agent or adjuster.  Remember, time is a tremendous factor.
  • Do shut off the water coming into your home.  However, only do this if you are 100% sure it is safe.  DO NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES.
  • Do not call your insurance agent in haste.  If you are 100% sure you are going to file a claim, go ahead and tell them…if not…don’t.  Many agents are required to report all losses to corporate, and these losses can go against you, increasing your insurance rates.  This is not always the case, but occasionally it is.  What we recommend is asking a hypothetical questions such as:  “If I had a this happen, would it be covered, and what is my deductible.”  This gives you time to decide if you are going to file a claim.  Consult with Global Restoration Services.
  • Do put water soaked pictures and important papers in the freezer.  Freezing the water in these items prevents further damage.  It is more likely to salvage them if they are first frozen.

Water damage arises from fire damage, broken pipes, blocked drains, malfunctioning appliances, storms and other causes. The appropriate treatment depends on the nature of the damage. Some water carries contaminates and should be considered hazardous (see sewage and Flood Damage, below). Whatever the origin, the prospects of restoration depend largely on the speed with which your building and personal property can be dried. Even clean water can generate mildew and other bacterial growth if neglected.

DO NOT

  • Operate TVs, vacuums or other appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors. Serious injury may result.
  • Use heat to dry closed building interiors; mildew and expanded moisture damage may result.
  • Leave wet fabrics in place; space them apart and dry as soon as possible.

Sewage and Flood Damage Tips

Water Damage Repair

Raw sewage and flood waters contain bacteria and other micro organisms which are extremely hazardous to human health. These can be transmitted by touching contaminated items or by tracking them into uncontaminated areas on shoes. Children and pets are especially vulnerable. Frequent handwashing is an important preventive measure. Absorbent materials such as carpeting and drywall may not be restorable after direct contact with sewage-contaminated or flood-contaminated water.
DO…
  • First, call Global Restoration Services for quick professional service. 24 Hour Quick Response Service 1 (888) 934-6456
  • Treat all water-impacted surfaces and furnishings as toxic, until properly decontaminated.
  • Keep children and pets out of contaminated areas.
DO NOT…
  • Track contaminated material into undamaged areas.
  • Attempt to decontaminate surfaces with sprays and other over-the-counter germicidal products, which may not fully disinfect contaminated surfaces.
